Throughout her life, Dr. Karen Mackoy has helped others. As a Registered Nurse she raised two children alone. Her children are now in college. She supported herself financially when she decided to take time off from work to earn a doctorate in health administration and to write her dissertation "Critical Thinking and Resolving Medical Errors as Perceived by Advanced Practice Nurses". Weeks after finding out her dissertation was approved and archived in the Library of Congress, she had major surgery prior to returning to work. She experienced a pulmonary embolism after the surgery. She was not able to get enough oxygen to sustain her and multiple parts of her brain were damaged. Dr. Mackoy has multiple medical problems and has a diminished capacity for short-term memory, reading comprehension and basic math. She has required therapy to regain skills such as grocery shopping and simple cooking.

Dr. Mackoy has used up her life savings and no longer has medical insurance. She has been told by her multiple physicians that she will not be able to return to work....ever. Her congressman said Social Security Disability claims have a backlog of 16,000 cases in her area and although he requested her case be expedited, her case was denied and her appeal is still "pending". Her small trailer has roof leaks and requires a new roof. She is financially and medically unable to sustain herself any longer. She is in desperate need of your help.
